OUT & ABOUT IN THE VALLEY

On this page we will give you an insight into the neighboring towns and villages in this area. They are Metković, Opuzen, Rogotin and Ploče.

METKOVIC

Known as the heart of the Neretva Valley, Metkovic is a town full of history, culture, nature and sport. With the river flowing directly through, it is also surrounded by stunning hills, which make it a perfect location for a relaxed visit away from the coast.

There is plenty to do and see in Metkovic, whether it be just strolling round the shops, drinking coffee, or indeed sipping on a nice glass of wine with your meal, there is something here to interest all.

And for all nature lovers, and bird watchers, there is a the Natural History Museum in the centre. It is only small but there is a wonderful display of all the regional wildlife, including 300+ species of birds.

In the Summer there is a very popular event held on the river  called the Boat Marathon.  It takes place on the second Saturday in August where more than 30 teams of 12 men take to the water and row 20 km of the river from Metković to Ploce.

There is also the women's race which starts at Metkovic and finishes in Opuzen.

On the outskirts of Metkovic , in the village of Vid, there is an Archeological Museum. There you will find the remains of the Roman city Narona. The museum was actually built directly over an ancient temple, and is the first museum of its kind in Croatia.

OPUZEN

THIS SMALL TOWN SITS ON THE LEFT BANK OF THE RIVER NERETVA AND IS LOCATED 12KM UPSTREAM FROM THE SEA

Opuzen is very special to us, as it was the first place we visited when looking for property. We fell in love with the village and its people straight away.  The Square, like most towns and villages, is the hub of Opuzen.  And in the summer months it is filled with many different events,  from the Summer Music Festival to St. Stephens Day, which is a celebration of the town, and the ZEN Festival which sees artists come from all over the world to adorn old and abandoned buildings with their artistic talents, brightening up the forgotten buildings.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQmoQBq--KY&t=66s

ROGOTIN

Rogotin is located between Ploče and Metković and is home to the recently installed WIND ORGAN.

This is the first of its kind in Croatia (possibly the world) and sits on Trovro Hill overlooking the village.

When the Bura wind starts blowing, chords from the wind organ can be heard.

The views from the top are breathtaking and most definitely worth a visit.

PLOCE

Ploce is not the most popular or biggest of cities, and I say cities lightly, but is worth a visit nevertheless.

It has 'city' status simply because of the population. In UK terms this is more like a town.

Ploce port is a big part of the City and it is here you will find home to the Jadrolina Ferries.  A highly recommended service for island hopping.
