Croatian food, like all countries, has specialties. Here in the Neretva Valley you will find frogs and eels top of the menu.
Never did I believe I would eat frogs! But I did, and surprisingly they were rather nice. They tasted very similar to a chicken thigh. As for eel it was a definite no from both of us.
Brudet is on every menu in the Valley. This is a slow cooked stew made with herbs and spices that bring out the flavours of the main ingredients - eels and frogs.

Freshly grilled fish also figures highly on the menus. And I must say, we have never enjoyed fish as much as we do in Croatia. Highly recommended. And of course, there is plenty of choice for the carnivores too.
The restaurants we have listed below are all local to us and have become firm favourites over the years.
Each one brings something different to the table, so to speak, and have been listed in no particular order of preference.
Jure and Naga have owned this restaurant for over 30 years and are such lovely obliging and happy hosts.
All the food is homemade by Naga and the helpings are fresh and plentiful. Naga also makes the most amazing cakes too.
As for Jure, he is the best of hosts. Not only that, he is a very talented artist and showcases his work in the Restaurant.
The Villa Neretva is another long standing hotel and restaurant.
The food is very good and popular with both locals and tourists. It is here that I first tried the Frogs and I don't think I have had them as good since.
The Villa is in walking distance from the apartment, so it is ideal if you want to have a carafe of wine with your meal.
The Nerenta is a good hotel restaurant. The menu might be limited but you will never leave hungry.
It is very reasonably priced too. Last year the hubby had fillet steak and all the sides for about £12.
If you don't eat meat this probably wont suit you, unless you are happy with just salad and homemade chips. Or, if like me, I choose the chicken every time.
The staff are very friendly and the service is very good too.
Bistro Metković is a fairly new restaurant and if you have a big appetite, then this is the place for you.
Their mixed meats and fish platters are amazing. We went with another couple and ordered the sharing platter for the four of us but, we could have got away with an order for 3.
The menu is varied and reasonably priced. Unfortunately it is in Croatian but, the owner has promised he will have some English menus ready for this year.
You will find this restaurant in Opuzen, to the side of the church in the Square.
Another traditional Konoba serving true Croatian fare. Although the owners don't speak much English they do their best to assist you with your requirements.
The Hubby celebrated one of his birthdays here with several of our Croatian friends and the service and food was spot on.
Not only is the food very good here, but so is the location. What better place to have a meal than by the river. That said, beware of the mosquitos when the sun goes down because you will get eaten alive. We learnt the hard way. So now only go there of an afternoon.
I forgot to mention earlier about another food specialty of Croatia, the Black Risotto. It is here you will find one of the best. Vouched for by the Hubby not me.
