It is over 10 years since we first discovered Croatia. And in that time we have enjoyed so much about the area we now call home. We have made lots of good friends along the way too.
We feel very lucky to have found this place and the people in it.
We have set up this website initially to showcase our holiday apartment but then realised we also had to give you an insight into this beautiful area, The Neretva Valley.
So to make sure you know what awaits you in this very special part of Croatia, please keep reading. Everything we talk about is from experience.
The Neretva River is the longest river that empties into the Adriatic Sea and, believe it or not, it is the coldest river in the world too! The majority of the river runs through Bosnia and Herzegovina, with the last 20kms or so forming the only delta in Croatia. In the summertime the river mouth is a very popular place with Kite surfers.
The Neretva Valley and its landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. It never ceases to take our breath away. It has an abundance of nature all around and is the 2nd largest ornithological park in Europe. As a place for migratory birds to rest in winter, it is considered to be one of the most important wetlands in Europe too.
Best known for its mandarin plantations, the Neretva Valley is often referred to as Little California. This is because of its rich soil and golden mandarin crops, which the eye can see far and wide, from Ploce to Metković. It has also been referred to as Little Venice because of all the vast manmade waterways, wetlands and back waters.
In the past, the traditional vessel, called a Lada, was the only mode of transportation across the rivers, but today they are used mainly for the tourists. Locally called Photo Safaris'. It is the best way to discover all the river channels and sail down one of the oldest swamps in Europe.
The tours offer an extraordinary experience to explore the Neretva Valley's untouched nature - sailing through narrow channels adorned with water lilies while sipping on homemade Wine or Rakija (a strong fruit brandy) and freshly prepared local delicacies. It is a wonderful day out and, from our experience, something you don't want to miss out on!
The Neretva Valley is famous for the many roadside stalls filled with all types of fruit and vegetables. Well known for their high quality and excellent taste, of which we can vouch for.
The stalls offer a wide variety of fruits, but the mandarin is the most prominent of them all. And quite possibly the tastiest too!
You will also find a fresh supply of vegetables, including seasonal tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, potatoes, garlic, to name but a few.
We cannot forget to mention the many varieties of honey too. Orange Blossom being our favourite.
The only difficulty you are going to have here is which stall to stop at? Personally, we choose the stalls that stand alone, as these tend to be the local family stalls that work the land tirelessly to produce such goods.
We cannot forget about them! A holiday is not complete without a beach day or three. And I can assure you, you are going to be spoilt for choice.
The Dubrovnik-Neretva County is full of beaches and in a page dedicated to such we will show you the beauty of this amazing coastline.
